Happiness Is.....

Waking up to a brand new day ahead. Having a family to share it with and friends to laugh out loud with. Hitting the snooze on the alarm clock just that one time. Seeing your children smile. Holding someone's hand that you care about. Listening to someone tell about the old days. Just feeling the sunshine on your face.

Someone asked the question, "Are you Happy?" on a forum that I belong to, just the other day. It made be stop and think for a minute about what happiness truly is. Do we make our own happiness? Or are we born with a certain personality, certain traits that determine whether you will be happy or not?

I have come to the conclusion, at least for me, that I am responsible for my own happiness. Sure, there will be sad days ahead, life as we know it couldn't exist without rough times. But, I have decided that with the exception of those few days, I will be happy.

Today would have been my grandmother's 81st Birthday. Sadly Grandma passed away in January of '98, but it really does feel just like yesterday. I can still hear her laugh, it was infectious and funny. I can remember watching Steel Magnolias with her one day, and the laughs were plentiful. She was an amazing woman and her heart so big. I miss her, but I am thankful that I had the time with her that I did. She was always around; every birthday, every special moment, everytime that you needed an ear to listen. So instead of being sad, I can be happy today that I had her in my life for those 23 years. It was a priviledge!

So what will make me happy today?

My kids. Above is a picture taken when we were on vacation in Myrtle Beach, SC, years ago. We had the best time and when I think back I remember this picture of all 3 kids in the biggest chair they had ever seen. Pure happiness.
This morning my 6 yr old son begged me to tickle the bottom of his feet. I think this was merely a ploy to stay in bed a few more minutes before getting dressed for school. Well, it worked!

My 13 yr old daughter managed to get out of bed on the first wake up call, get dressed and make breakfast for herself. Giving me just another few minutes to hit the snooze.

My 15 yr old son woke himself up(this part is miraculous!) and gave me the nicest smile when I dropped him off at the bus stop!

My husband, whom has been out of work for the last month, just left for an interview. He is waiting to hear back today on an offer from an interview this past Monday.

My mug. Yes, I know it is silly. My mom bought 2 of these for me a few weeks ago, no occasion, just because, I think she paid $1 each. They are apple green with painted white dots and were made in Spain. I'm not sure why it makes me happy to drink my hot tea from this cup, but it does! A few pictures here, because well my camera makes me happy too!

My curtains. As I sat drinking my hot tea and eating my cinnamon peanut butter toast(yummy!) this morning, I was reminded of how happy my cafe style curtains make me! I made them from a Michael Miller 50's Kitchen print. I haven't gotten around to the top curtain or the matching placemats, but these rather plain curtains make me happy just the same.

My scraps. I have the biggest tote full of scraps. I went through it the other day to give Noah's teacher a big bag full for her Kindergarten class to use. I put everything away, except for these scraps that remained on my cutting table. They just make me happy, not sure why.
My selvedges. I have to be honest and say that I have sadly been throwing these away for years! Oh, the horror! Not until I read all the great things that can be done with them here, http://vintagericrac.blogspot.com/2008/10/big-selvedge-project.html ,
did I realize their true potential. I have yet, to sew any up. But one day, oh one day, what fun they will be.So many things to be thankful for and it's only 9:30 in the morning!

I think my happiness should be spread around! I am going to do my first blog give away in honor of my Grandma, Clara Nell.
I have thought about it, for just a few minutes and decided my Scalloped Fancy Flea Market tote would be the appropriate gift. I had it for sale in my etsy shop, but it would make me happiest to just give it away. My first love of sewing was tote bags. My favorite line of fabric ever, Flea Market Fancy by Denyse Schmidt. And it even has a vintage button for the center of the flower, and vintage makes me smile too! I will even throw some things into the bag that make me smile and hopefully you too.
So just leave me a comment on my blog about who or what makes you happy. It can be the smallest thing. It can be silly or sweet. Just whatever puts a smile on your face. I will let you know in 2 weeks who the winner is.

I am happy when I go to wake up my one year old, and she gives me her biggest "just for mommy" smile, and kicks her legs and waves her arms in excitement to see me.

It makes me happy that I am make her so happy just by being there.

Cooking yummy food for my family makes me happy!

Opening up an unexpected gift makes me happy!

Looking at your bag makes me happy. :)

Also, my 2 year old being my alarm clock every morning makes me happy. Tickling her and my husband tickling me, the smiling faces of my family and a clean house make me happy. Snuggling makes me happy. Coffee in the morning makes me happy.

Getting to spend some time sewing and finish something and feeling like I've accomplished a lot in a day makes me happy.

My daughter Margot coming to me with every single yogurt she eats, when she's finished, and asking me to help her "get one more big bite" always makes me happy.

Spending the day in my jammies makes me happy. The leftover ice cream cake in my freezer makes me happy. Learning how to swim makes me happy.

Getting presents makes me happy and giving them makes me happier.

Knowing that we're not in the greatest of situations right now, and knowing that I have my family and that all will be okay makes me very happy.

Right now, my DD's crazy hair and desire to blow bubbles makes me happy.

my happiness is my family, for my wonderful husband who has stood by me through everything we've faced as a couple and as parents. My happiness is my oldest son Danny who is my hero, the smallest things we take for granted he doesn't, he is autistic(pdd-nos) and nonverbal(95%)he constantly puts a smile on my face and reminds me to cherish the small things because they can add up to amazing accomplishments. My happiness is in heaven with my daughter Gracie she has taught me to love and live every moment I have here with the ones I love. She has also has grown a love in my heart deeper then I could have ever imagined possible. I miss her always. My happiness is my 2nd son Andy who taught me how wonderful words and learning can be as well as how to be a better parent, he is my rainbow baby. My happiness is my new daughter Delainey. Her giggles, cooing and squeals lets me know that my moments with her are so real, a dream come true, such a blessing and a gift. One that I never thought would happen to me twice but God answered our prayers. I'm so happy that I get to share her memories with my mom and sister(all my family). I always feel so blessed and I thank God for them everyday even when we have a rough day I always always try to find something positive. These are just a few of my happinesses in life, thanks for reading and for asking this question.*hugs* Dawn(dannylion01 on SM)

I am happy!
Today I am happy because it is Fall Break and Ahnalin and I are in Sparks, NV visiting my parents. I get to sew all day if I want when I am here!

I am happy because both of my parents are healthy and alive and still in love with each other. The same is true for my in-laws. They have all taught me so much, and it has helped me and my hubby have a great marriage of 21 years.

I am happy because both of my children are healthy and doing well, in spite of chronic illnesses which are often a battle.

I am happy because of my faith which tells me I am loved and forgiven and can love and forgive in return.

I am happy because my hubby has more work now!!!!!!

And I am happy because I just made strawberry banana smoothies for breakfast. YUMMY!

My true JOY comes from God.

I'm happy when I teach my kids. And when I see them smile!!

I'm happy when I get hugs and when we have family devotions.

I'm happy to see my husband's accomplishments in his job.

I too had a g'ma that made me happy. We took her to epcot the year we lived in Florida, and it was sooooo much fun, her visit was about 2 weeks.

I'm happy when I make time to sew for my girls, and they appreciate it!

I love to think about being happy, thanks for this opportunity!

Seeing my sweetie's face light up when I walk in the door. Sitting in the Living Room with him while we each read our own book or magazine. Hearing my nephews giggles. My fabric. My sewing room. The thought of a Quilt retreat two weeks from today...so many things. I am truly grateful. And this post made me so happy to read...

Fall, beautiful leaves on the trees, a chilly day at home with a fire in the fireplace, kids camped out with toys and books and blankets in the living room, baking things my family loves to eat and brags to their friends about, my son running to greet his classmates at school with pure joy every single morning, I could go on and on...but I'll just add one more thing...tote bags make me happy, making them, using them, having them! I LOVE tote bags.

Nice post, and very generous giveaway!

I am so filled with happiness looking at my sleeping children. No matter what happened during the day, good or bad, seeing them so relaxed and so asleep always brings me joy. I am so blessed with my two, they make me happy every day. In fact, that is the last thing I say to my 4 year old when I leave her room at bed time...I love you and you make me so happy. Thanks for the giveaway, your post was fantastic and the FMF tote is awesome.

I am so very happy when all my children are home! They are getting older now (21,20,17,14) so they actually have their own lives. I love it when they're home...together. My husband and I still love each other after 22+ years of marriage and our children love each other also. When we're all together, all is well. Thanks for asking. Your work is really beautiful.

My 4 year old granddaughter makes me happy. When my son married almost a year ago, I got a granddaughter along with a daughter in law. We sang Old McDonald had a farm and You Are My Sunshine, played Barnyard Boogie Woogie and read Five Little Monkeys Jumping On The Bed yesterday when she got to spend the nite with Gamma. That's the good stuff.

Great blog and a great contest idea. There are so many things that make me happy and I love reading all the other comments about happintess. First and foremost God, my husband and my children make me happy.

In general what makes me really happy is when people are kind and gentle to each other. Kind in real life and online. Gentle in how they talk and act toward each other. In this technological and virtual age with all the cell phones, texting, tweeting, and social networking I think people forget how to be in the moment with those around them. So that is what makes me happy- to see children being kind to other children, adults being kind to other adults, etc...

Having a family that stood by and did everything for me when I was in bed sick for 2 years made me realize what great kids and husband I had...that made me really happy. Not thinking it could happen again and being proven wrong and realizing that same family would once again take care of me for the past 5 months while I have been back in bed makes me certain that even though you are sick you can still be so stinkin happy. I love you Gerald, Levi, Sara & Sam...Radonda

Hi Heather, hmm things that make me happy. snowy mornings by the fire with a latte, when the sun comes up at 4:45 in the summer and wakes me up, a sleepy, snuggly cat, FABRIC!!!!!!, sewing, floating down the river in my kayak early in the morning, the smell of the forest (makes me crying happy!), the blue, blue, sky, helping someone in need, and making people laugh.
Thanks for the sweet giveaway Heather!

My toddler has the GREATEST laugh, and it makes me so happy to watch her grow and learn. She's really into books these days, and the other day she just started trying to "read" aloud the books that we've read together all these months. When she was done, she said "Mommy! I did it MySELF!" and it was the greatest thing :)

It has also made me happy to be able to share my toddler's laughter with her great grandmother over the phone recently. She has only met her once because we live more than 2000 miles apart, but we try to call when we can and always send lots of pictures. I know she happy it makes her to be able to hear her only great grandchild's voice and laughter, so it makes me happy to be able to share that with her :)

I went to a Bob Dylan concert recently and there were 2 elderly ladies (I'm 30, I'm guessing they were 65ish) in front of me that were having the best time. They danced around and were clearly excited to be there. I had almost as much fun watching them as I did watching Dylan himself! It made me really happy to see the joy on people's faces, young and old, at that show. So as you can guess, music & people's relationship with it makes me happy!

I read thru some of your posts and am now subscribed. Congrats on your husband's job and I really enjoyed reading your happy post it was very uplifing. I'm happy with HOME. Everything to do with it. Working on it inside and out, cleaning it, cooking meals in it, even teenager arguments in it because the make-up hugs are so good, making it a comfy refuge for my husband and son to come home to. Feeling safe inside with a roof over my head and food in the fridge, sitting on the floor with my dogs and just feeling their warmth and love. Sometimes I just walk around with my coffee cup in hand and say thank you God, I love being home. Thank you for the opportunity to share.
